The college experience — a campus filled with 20-somethings who live in dorms and join clubs and fraternities — is "becoming more and more of a minority," said Jeff Seaman of the Sloan Consortium, a nonprofit group that tracks online education.
The change has some administrators wondering how these students will develop social skills and maturity, traditional byproducts of the college experience.
Others argue that students may actually interact more online, when perhaps they're less inhibited.
"There's so many exciting things going on in online teaching that aren't really even possible in a face-to-face class," said Diane Williams, director of USF's Center for 21st Century Teaching Excellence.
To ensure students are interacting with their professors and peers, USF taps into a menu of options: chat rooms, social networking, Twitter, text messages, videos on YouTube and podcasts, Williams said.

Do you choose online adjuncting or is that "all you can get"?

I have been reading several online teaching listserves and one of the ongoing themes is "how can I get a full time job teaching online?" Most people think that they would like a full time position for the benefits (if there are any worth having and you have to pay for them), the nice pay check (although usually not that great compared to adjuncting at several schools), the security (not in this economy), and a regular schedule with time off (okay so that might be a good reason).

The full time online faculty I know make between 45-75K depending on the school and expectations for full time faculty. And in several of these schools, signing a full time contract also means signing an agreement that you will not teach for any other school at the time of your full time employment. Now this is not true everywhere, but I know of at least three universities that have this requirement.

On the lower end of the salary scale, full time faculty generally are expected to teach quarters or semesters and have time off between terms. They teach 6 classes online every term (3-4 terms per year) and generally have a few extra responsibilities thrown into the mix that involve committee or admin work, course writing/development, student advising, etc.(all inclusive in the salary -- no extra pay).

On the higher end of the scale, I know full time faculty who have admin responsibilities plus they teach year round, 6 classes per term, have paid holidays (that's a joke in online teaching) and two weeks of paid vacation per year. But here's the kicker with vacation -- there are never two weeks off consecutively during the year. So you are either (1) stuck with taking one week at a time and you also have to finalize classes and prepare new classes to open during that time or (2) you schedule two weeks at another time of the year which means you take time off during a term and so you have to NOT teach that term since you'll be gone one or two weeks. This means that you give up all your classes that term but you are required to teach a certain number of classes so you have to double up in other terms that year.

How ridiculous is that? Seems to me it smacks royally of "taking advantage of online faculty" whether adjunct or full time.

I am adjunct online faculty at three schools at the current time. One major university pays very nicely and I never turn down a class there. All courses are pre-written and all I do is teach. There are NO other responsibilities. It's a dream job for sure and I've worked here for nearly ten years. The work is steady and the pay goes up every year. My hourly pay rate over the years has ranged from $30 - 50. And did I already say "all I do is teach"?

I've worked for other universities that are on 8 and 11 week terms and the classes are also pre-written. The pay is not as good and my pay rate worked out to about 17-20 an hour at one school. Then they started increasing the responsibilities, such as writing lectures to deliver synchronously online, and not increasing pay.When my hourly rate fell to around $10,  I left that school.  The other school (with 7 weeks) was so intensive that the time I spent each week worked out to about $8 an hour. I left that school too.

My other two schools pay quite a bit less but the work hours quite a bit fewer on a weekly basis. My time works out to about 20/hour at one and 40-45/hour at another.Until recently there were no additional responsibilities other than teaching.

Many adjuncts are finding that they are doing lots of extra work for no extra pay. Recently I received forms and instructions for tasks that would involve about 6-10 hours of time to complete. There is no extra pay for this. When we teach classes that are our own design, we make revisions in preparation for a new term and there is no extra pay for that. When adjuncts are required to do extra work for no pay, it's like they can just say no. So we do the extra work and that cuts down the hourly rate we make per term.

Yet all in all, there are benefits to adjuncting full time. One is choosing when and where to work. The other is a nice pay check if you teach at several schools. Another is tuition-free or reduced classes. All my schools have offered reduced tuition (and even waived tuition in some cases) for adjunct faculty. One school where I teach even offers half tuition for family members.

Some schools now offer substitute instructor services for adjunct faculty in the event of emergencies. I like that idea. Generally online adjunct faculty have two choices: (1) work through the emergency as best you can or (2) take off for that term. I've done both.

The bottom line is that online adjuncting full time (meaning teaching as many classes as permitted at several schools) can be lucrative and rewarding. I like the nice paychecks. I also like the diversity among students and coworkers. I don't mind working on vacations -- the flip side is that I can travel whenever and wherever I wish and am not stuck limited vacation time.

For me, the best part is teaching in different subject areas at different schools. Right now I'm teaching 8 different classes and I can definitely say that one thing's for sure: I never get bored.

These all make sense and could serve to strengthen online programs. I've been a bit disgusted at the lowering of standards in college classes (in some schools, not all) and anything to keep standards high is okay in my book. 

Week 4 - whew!

Week 4 seemed to zip right by. We had a great moderator on Nicenet, Sueanne Parker, who was very active in encouraging everyone to be more specific, think more deeply, and broaden horizons. We had more people mentioning lack of resources, and also many people giving suggestions for what to do with very few resources. I am very impressed by the resourcefulness of so many of the teachers.

The posts on Nicenet seemed much better this week, so I think I did a better job of putting together the questions. I've been working on these with my colleague Char, who provides another perspective on the assignment plans and great advice about how to frame the discussion questions. Each group is different, of course, so the questions are a bit different from one course to the next.
It would be much better all around if the teachers could actually try some of these techniques with their students while we're in this course. It was much easier last term that way - even more great ideas emerged when the teachers were able to test the concepts with actual students. I hope that there will be enough ideas - and discussion of projects by the end of the course - that everyone will try to implement at least one new thing in their classes.
Looking at technology used online in another way, I was involved in a webinar (web-based seminar) with some teachers in Israel this morning. Rick Rosenberg, the Regional English Language Officer, is doing a face-to-face session on technology tools. He invited me to talk about software. We tested the setup the night before - voice and video on Skype, chat on Skype and a Ning (a kind of social network site), and a range of tools on Adobe Connect - and everything worked. It seemed very slow on my end, but I thought that might be because Rick was on a wireless connection.
However, when time came for the actual session (7:30 am my time, 5:30 pm there), the audio did not work at all. I had no idea if they could see and hear me. After struggling for 15 minutes or so, we shifted to chat on the Ning. That worked well enough, but it just was not what we had hoped for. Rick said later that the technicians had made some sort of change to the system earlier that day, and the technicians had left by the time for the webinar. I'm hoping they were able to see the PowerPoint show that I'd sent to Rick earlier. (Here's a link to the PDF version.)
Lessons learned: Always have Plan B (we did - the chat); don't let the technicians make changes to the system before a webinar; and make sure the technicians are available during a technology-heavy webinar. Generally speaking, chat or a Nicenet-style discussion board will work well, but audio and video are tricky.

We'll hope for better luck next time!

Little by little, step by step

We've gotten through eight weeks of this 10-week course now. I've been very pleased in general with how well this has gone. I really wish that teachers had a way to try the new techniques with students while they're in the course. Since this is summer, that's not really an option. So we'll have to wait until fall to see what people actually do try and what actually works.

I'm very hopeful that a cadre of learner-centered, technology-aware teachers in developing. Critical mass is necessary for change to begin and to take root. Iraq is on the edge of widespread technology development and use. When that happens, then the teachers who have already started using technology in their classes will have a real advantage. I hope they'll also be ready to train their colleagues so that all students will be able to benefit.

I'll be very curious to see what the teachers do this week. We're working on going from theory to practice - developing course sites and creating activities and handouts to use online or offline. Now the proverbial rubber will hit the road - and we'll see who zips along and who gets stuck by the roadside. I'm sure there will be quite a few very good courses and exercises created. I'm just hoping that there won't be too many technical barriers in the way!

Alumna - teaches for America

While many recent college graduates are spending the summer looking for full-time employment, recent Oakland University graduate Julia Hunko already knows where she will be this fall – back in the classroom. 
Hunko was selected as one of 4,950 young adults from 45,000 applicants to become a part of Teach for America.
Bridging the gap
Established in 1990, Teach for America is a program of AmeriCorps that trains recent college graduates and professionals to teach in low-income schools in the inner-cities and rural areas of the U.S. Their focus is to ensure educational equality for all students.
“The program has a main goal of trying to end the achievement gap between the better-income school districts and the lower-income school districts,” said Hunko, who received her bachelor’s degree in political science from OU in April. “If you go to an inner-city school, a lot of the kids have a lower reading level than they do in the suburbs.”
Hunko’s interest was sparked by her sister, who has has been a part of Teach for America for three years, teaching eighth-grade English in the Bronx. Hunko plans to attend law school in the future, but wanted to do something worthwhile before she takes that next step.
“I wanted to do something, either volunteer work like Peace Corps or AmeriCorps, so I decided on Teach for America because I felt really strongly about their specific mission of ending the achievement gap,” she said.
Happy to learn
A trip to Israel in the summer of 2009 helped reinforce her decision to apply for the program. 
She went on the OU-sponsored trip as a part of the Michigan-Central Galilee Partnership 2000 Program to teach English acquisition to sixth-grade       students.
“Those kids were adorable, wonderful. It was so great when they would learn something new. You would see it in their whole expression,” Hunko said. “They were just so happy that they were learning English.”
After returning from Israel, Hunko began the extensive application process, which was due at the end of September. 
The online application included personal information, two references, a resume and an essay about why she wanted to become a part of Teach for America. 
Hunko then had to wait a month and a half before she was chosen for a half-hour phone interview with a former Corps member who taught in Philadelphia. 
Another month later and she made it to the last step of the process, an in-person, day-long interview in Detroit with six other applicants from the area.
“In the morning we did a group interview. Then you had to teach a lesson for five minutes in the subject area you chose. I chose seventh-grade social studies and taught the three branches of the government.”
After lunch came a 90-minute individual interview -— her last chance to impress.
“They asked really interesting, kind of random, questions,” Hunko said. “They were asking what your hardest class in college was and how you got through the course. They asked why you wanted to join Teach for America.”
Another scenario involved a mock parent-teacher conference with a parent whose child had been misbehaving. 
They were also very interested in her experience with Model United Nations, a club Hunko started at OU in 2008 and has since won multiple awards while serving as president.
“One of the things that they really look for is leadership qualities. They want something on your resume that is a leadership role.”
Eventually, the 8-hour day came to an end and yet another waiting game began. It wasn’t until the end of January that the status of her application was going to to be posted online, and Hunko found herself checking the website every five minutes to see if she had been accepted. 
The good news finally came when she returned home from her job at the College of Arts and Sciences advising office one night.
“I was very happy,” Hunko said. “I worked so hard; that application process was crazy. People I was talking to at the interview were like, ‘You’re still in school? How are you doing this if you’re still in school? That’s crazy.’ It was very exciting.”
Getting accepted
Many of those accepted into Teach for America come from big name, Ivy League schools, so Hunko is proud to stand out from the crowd with her OU degree.
“I think Oakland is what you make of it. Oakland is very up-and-coming from what it used to be a few years ago. It’s made leaps and bounds, and people who know what Oakland is respect it, which is what I like about it.”
The education she’s received at Oakland has helped prepare her for the fast-paced training that is in store for her this summer. 
Hunko chose Chicago as the city she is going to be teaching in for the next two years, and moves there this week to begin certification and placement at a school.
“From what I understand, the first week is just introduction to the program, to the people. After that I will start teaching at a summer school. They pretty much just throw you in.”
In the mornings, Hunko will take classes at Dominican University in suburban Chicago to receive her teaching certification from the state of Illinois. In the afternoon, she will be teaching. 
Outside of the classroom, she has textbooks to study, questions to answer, and a DVD of teachers giving lessons to reflect on. 
Teach for America provides trainees with a dorm to stay in and meals during training, as well as financial aid to ease the transition and help find a permanent home at the end of the summer.
“They really do help you. They don’t just throw you out into the wolves and say, ‘Find an apartment,’” Hunko said. “It really helps with the down payment because you don’t get paid until mid-September. That’s your first paycheck.”
When the fall does come, Hunko will be receiving the same salary and benefits of other certified teachers in the city of Chicago.
“I’m really excited to be on my own and be in Chicago. I’m going to have a real job, after having my bachelor’s for less than three months,” Hunko said.
For her, though, the best part of the package was guaranteed health        insurance.
“To me, that is worth it all. I am so excited to have that security.”
Advice for students
Her main piece of advice to other students that are considering the Teach for America program is to remember what it’s all about.
“Be serious about what the program is. This is not something you go into lightly,” she said. “Understand that it is two years of your life that is committed to something great like ending the achievement gap. If you can do that, then you should think about applying. Just go into it knowing that it will probably be the hardest thing you will ever do.”
As she prepares to move to Chicago, Hunko still has her fears as she starts this new chapter in her life. Being responsible for education can be a large load to carry. 
“I’m afraid that I’m going to be a bad teacher,” Hunko said. “I just hope that I am a good teacher. I don’t want to mess up anybody’s sixth-grade English or social studies course. I want them to like me, you know? But I feel so happy that I have a job, and I will be teaching and I will be doing something that is worth something.”
